Press Release: JAOtech addresses hygiene challenge for hospital bedside IT systems
21th January 2008
Redhill, UK, 21 January 2008 – JAOtech today announced that all of its hospital bedside terminals are being manufactured using plastics injected with Novaron, a silver based inorganic anti-microbial agent. JAOtech terminals are the only PCs specifically designed to UL60601 standards for hygenic hospital ward environments, and featuring sealed construction suitable for deep cleaning with standard hospital detergents.
According to Warren Kressinger-Dunn, JAOtech Managing Director, “IT hardware on the ward needs to be regularly and thoroughly cleaned like anything else otherwise it will collect germs. For example, research by microbiologists at UCLH – supported by NHS Connecting for Health which is delivering the national IT programme to hospitals - has shown bacterial levels on the keyboards fall by 70 per cent if they are cleaned every 12 hours. JAOtech terminals are specifically designed to be easy to clean, with minimal or no crevices and gaps, good sealing to prevent ingress of moisture, and of course the addition of Novaron to the case plastics to discourage the accumulation of microbes in the first place.”
JAOtech terminals are supplied as a one-piece unit, with all of the electronics and a touch screen contained in a single case sealed to IP65 at the front and IP64 at the back. JAOtech has tested its hardware for exposure to most cleaning agents used in hospitals including .Alcohol, Methylene Chloride, Methyl Ethyl Ketone and Acetone. Although many options are available for the unit, for hospital use the recommended specification uses an on-screen keyboard rather than a separate unit, and no loudspeakers. A key feature of the design is its low power consumption, which eliminates the need for a fan with an associated ventilation grille.
The Novaron, silver-based inorganic antimicrobial agent is manufactured by Toagosei Co., Ltd. Of Japan, and has been found to be effective in inhibiting the growth of the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) virus. The efficacy of Novaron has recently been confirmed by Virus Research Institute of the Chinese Government, the global authority in the field of SARS research (patent pending). It has been recognized as demonstrating superior antimicrobial performance as well as a high degree of safety, having been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and is employed in numerous antimicrobial processed products both in Japan and overseas.

Press Release: Bedside terminals are designed for the job
14th January 2008
Redhill, UK, 14 January 2008 – JAOtech today unveiled a portfolio of three new terminals specifically designed to address the demanding, and fast growing hospital Patient Entertainment Terminal market. The JAOtech terminals were conceived around UL60601 requirements, and feature anti-bacterial plastics and a noiseless design.
Based around PC technology with a range of different processor options, JAOtech terminals can be run on Linux and Windows and are compatible with all major PC applications. In addition to meeting the requirements of UL60601 in full, the terminals include a host of design features that suit them to the demanding, sterile environment of a hospital ward, including open plan areas. All three terminals can be readily cleaned using conventional hospital cleaning and sterilisation agents, offering a wipe down design, and sealed front and rear faces to IP65 and IP64 respectively as well as the benefit of anti-bacterial plastics. JAOtech has used innovative electronic design to minimise heat creation within the unit – a challenge for a compact, slim terminal. Using state-of-the-art processors, and creative heat dissipation including the use of the support arm, means that none of the three terminals requires a fan for cooling. Features such as call alerts are implemented using LEDs – the only sound output from the terminal is via the attached headphones, optional telephone or mini loudspeakers.
A key design feature is the support arm. In response to customer feedback, it incorporates a patented clutch that gives way under load in a controlled manner. This safely discourages use of the terminal as a lifting aid or patient support with risk of damage to the wall, the terminal or injury to the patient or ward staff. All three terminals are offered with a full package of peripherals supporting all popular Patient Entertainment Terminal applications. These include a VoIP phone, magstripe / smart card readers, high resolution camera for patient monitoring, biometrics, barcode scanner and a wireless keyboard.
The terminals offered by JAOtech are the 15” Zivo®, the 15” widescreen Jima® 15" and the
Obie® 17" Smart Terminal. All three terminals are offered in a wide range of colours and plastics, and can be customised to meet the needs of each hospital installation.

Press Release: Italian ICT leader partners with JAOtech. Announcement follows successful roll-out in Crema
7th January 2008
Redhill, UK, 7 January 2008 – Lutech, the Italian ICT and engineering services group, today announced a technology partnership with JAOtech for Patient Entertainment Terminal hardware. The announcement follows the successful completion by Lutech of a project in the 400-bed Maggiore di Crema hospital in Italy, using JAOtech terminals.
Commenting on the partnership with JAOtech, Luigi Pellegrini, Technical Director of Lutech SpA said, “Lutech carefully evaluated numerous options for terminal hardware before we selected JAOtech as our technology partner. We are impressed by the outstanding and carefully thought-out design of their unit, which was developed specifically for the hospital environment. JAOtech has also proved extremely flexible in adapting the product to suit the application. Their track record in this market with UK and US hospitals provided further reassurance to us of their ability to meet Lutech’s high standards for suppliers in this demanding environment.”
Warren Kressinger-Dunn, Managing Director of JAOtech, added, “Lutech is a recognised leader in information technology engineering in Italy, with a ten year track record of delivering innovative and complex ICT infrastructures and services and established relationships with hospitals. They are strongly positioned to capture a leadership position as healthcare managers recognise the opportunity to add a new dimension to their patient services through the provision of entertainment terminals, as well as to improve efficiency through better clinical access to patient records and streamlined hospital management. We are delighted that they have selected JAOtech as a partner.”
In the Maggiore di Crema hospital, the Lutech system uses JAOtech terminals running Lincor MEDIVista™ under Linux to deliver triple play voice, video and internet data services to patients. As a result, patients are offered video-on-demand, television, audio books, games, radio, email and web browsing as well as incoming and outgoing phone calls. To support this, JAOtech supplied terminals including a VoIP phone as well as a camera for patient monitoring, and a smart-card reader conforming to the Italian standard giving the potential in the future to add secure access to clinical records. The capital funding for the project was provided by Lutech.
